JEAN B SMITH, CERAMIC SCULPTOR
My current body of work is influenced by Alexander Calder, Jean Arp, Joan Miro, as well as Anne Truitt, Carmen Herrera, and Etel Adnan. These people all share the ideas of abstraction, surface, and color, with or without movement. I consider this work to be Mid-Century Modern which was popular between 1945 and 1975, and to me, it is timeless.
I work with mid-range paper clay, using the slab roller to prepare it for its final design. Some of my work is functional, however most of it is decorative. I have been working as a full-time artist since 1986. I have belonged to Zip 37 co-op gallery in Denver from 2000, until it's closing in 2018. I have been a member of the Colorado Chapter of the Women's Caucus for Art since it's inception in Denver in 1990.
I am currently connected to D'art Gallery in Denver.
